Please read John Updike's poem "Telephone Poles". Write (type) a one page, double spaced interpretation of the poem's meaning based on an explication of its imagery. What does this mean? Read the poem, note and consider the imagery, then, write an interpretation of the poem's meaning based on this imagery.
This is diagnostic - I expect you to be challenged. You will be graded on your honest and conscientious attempt at interpreting the poem. You have one shot; the one-page interpretation needs to be turned in on Monday - the beginning of class.

Poetry Role
POET - Write a nineteen line villanelle that records the reading or responds to the reading. You could do a little of both. For your villanelle, consider using a sentence from the book as your controlling line or lines (Line 1 and/or Line 3).
The villanelle is one of the most common forms or poetry templates used in the English language – second only to the sonnet. The villanelle form is effective because of its repeated pattern of sounds and lines – this repetition, when used correctly has a powerful and haunting effect.
The form requires only two rhyme sounds, and its nineteen lines are divided into three five three-line stanzas (tercets) and a four line concluding stanza (quatrain). The first and third lines of the first stanza serve as refrain lines entwined with the rhyme pattern – the first line repeated at the ends of the second and fourth stanzas, and the third repeated at the ends of the third and fifth stanzas. In the concluding stanza, the refrains are repeated as lines 18 and 19. We can express the pattern thus:
A1bA2
abA1
abA2
abA1
abA2
abA1A2
Use the most famous villanelle in history, “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas to study and then acquire the skill of the villanelle.

Directions for the Connector
CONNECTOR – Write two paragraphs that summarize and then connect to the real world
Your first job is to prepare a brief summary of today’s reading. In the first paragraph, begin with a lead that generalizes the action of the assigned reading, and then provide details about the plot complications and character conflicts that provide insight into the reading. Feel free to base your summary around an important quotation from your novel. End your summary with the dominant theme from the selection. This will serve as a springboard for your connector entry. Please write at least seven sentences for the first paragraph.
FOCUS ON THE SENTENCE – Each day you complete a writing role, identify the skills discussed in the beginning of class by highlighting and underlining examples in your own writing. In the second paragraph, make connections to the reading. Refer back to the pep talk for ideas. How does this section connect to our school? How does this section connect to other stories or movies? How does this section connect to topics in the news? Use as many specifics as you can – remember this rough draft will be turned into a more polished piece for your blog. Consider this example: “The character Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights reminds me of the character Creasy played by Denzel Washington in Man on Fire. In the book, Heathcliff silently swears vengeance and purposely hurts the ones he loves the most. In the movie, Creasy also swears vengeance on the kidnappers of Pita, the little girl he was supposed to protect. Although the book and movie are set in different time periods, they both deal with the theme of revenge, and how this dangerous human emotion can hopelessly consume you.”

Directions for the Journaler
JOURNALER – Write two paragraphs that summarize and respond to the reading
Your first job is to prepare a brief summary of today’s reading. Effective readers can visualize what they read and then describe the events with details and specifics. In the first paragraph, begin with a lead that generalizes the action of the assigned reading, and then provide details about the plot complications and character conflicts that provide insight into the reading. Feel free to base your summary around an important quotation from your novel. End your summary with the dominant theme from the selection. This will serve as a springboard for your journal response. Please write at least seven sentences for the first paragraph.
In the second paragraph, reflect on the day’s reading. Consider the theme from the assigned reading and how it relates to you. Have you been in similar a situation? Can you empathize with any of the characters? Does the reading remind you of someone? Does the setting remind you of a place you have visited? Please write at least five sentences for the second paragraph.
